PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certification proves that wood, paper or wood products come from sustainably managed forests. It is the most widely recognized forest certification system in the world — covering over 330 million hectares of forest in more than 55 countries. For Romanian companies — logging, sawmills, processing, furniture, paper, packaging, trading — PEFC certification ensures access to international markets and compliance with European client requirements, especially in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
The reference standard is PEFC ST 2002 (Chain of Custody). The certificate is valid for 5 years with annual surveillance audits. In Romania, PEFC certification integrates directly with the SUMAL system for end-to-end traceability — from forest to finished product. For the DACH market, PEFC is typically preferred over FSC.

How long does the PEFC certification audit take?
The external audit takes 1-3 days depending on company complexity. Internal preparation takes 2-4 weeks — during this time you complete documentation, train staff and pass our internal pre-evaluation audit.
What documents are needed for PEFC certification?
Commercial documents (input/output invoices, contracts with PEFC-certified suppliers), material identification procedures, material movement register, staff training records, PEFC declarations on output invoices. We provide all framework procedures — you adapt them to your company's concrete operations.
How does PEFC certification integrate with SUMAL?
SUMAL is Romania's national wood traceability system. PEFC certification adds an independent verification layer on top of SUMAL for international markets. In practice, your SUMAL data feeds directly into the PEFC input/output register.
What is the difference between PEFC and FSC?
Both are international chain-of-custody certification systems. PEFC is preferred by buyers in Germany, Austria, Switzerland (DACH region) and has the largest area covered globally. FSC is preferred by Western European buyers (IKEA, Decathlon, B&Q). Many companies choose dual certification to access both markets.
How can PEFC certification be lost?
Certification can be suspended or withdrawn if annual surveillance audits fail, if major documentation irregularities appear, or if the company sells non-certified products with a PEFC claim.
