UK Timber Regulation (UKTR)

The United Kingdom's post-Brexit timber legality framework

What is the UKTR?

Following Brexit, the UK adopted its own Timber Regulation (UKTR) to replace the EU Timber Regulation. The UKTR maintains similar requirements to the EUTR, requiring operators who place timber and timber products on the UK market to conduct due diligence to ensure legality of sourcing.

Key Requirements

Due Diligence

Operators must implement a due diligence system to minimize the risk of placing illegally harvested timber on the UK market.

Information Gathering

Collect species, quantity, country of harvest, supplier details, and evidence of compliance with local laws.

Risk Assessment

Assess the risk of illegal harvesting based on available information, and take mitigation measures where risk is not negligible.

Who Needs to Comply?

  • UK-based operators placing timber on the UK market for the first time
  • Importers of timber and timber products into the UK
  • Companies exporting to the UK that need to demonstrate legality to their UK buyers
